Memo: Live-LLM error by demographic group (DeepSeek v2 stereotyping slices)
Research memorandum — MAE and signed error across Sex, Student status, and Employment groups from the committed v2 export
Research question: Does the live full-cohort LLM’s prediction error vary systematically with demographic or contextual group membership — and do gaps widen as persona tiers accumulate?
1 Answer, Response, + Summary of Results
Group-CA MAE and signed error (predicted − ground truth) were sliced by Sex, Student status, and Employment status ((Cheng et al., 2023; Salewski et al., 2023)) from the committed DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Llama-8B v2 export (exports/v2/psych755_vllm_deepseek_r1_distill_llama8b_v2_full_cohort_20260730_2213/tables/stereotyping_by_*.csv). Slices cover all five v2 tiers (demos → full).
Short answer: Sex and student-status MAE gaps are small (≤ ≈0.5 points). Employment is the striking slice: Full-Time error sits at 4.35–4.63 in every tier, while Part-Time and Other hover at 5.5–6.2. Signed error is near zero for Full-Time (−0.01) but −2.0 to −3.6 for Part-Time / Other at every tier — the live agent systematically under-predicts CA for non-full-time respondents. This sharpens the RQ1 story: employment does not shrink overall MAE, but it is a real ****calibration split**** in the live model.

Signed error (predicted − true) at demos / transit: Full-Time −0.01 / +0.43; Part-Time −2.00 / −1.68; Other −3.58 / −3.61. The gap is present from the base tier and does not close with richer context — the agent’s point estimates for Part-Time and Other respondents sit 2.0–3.6 points below their true group-CA scores.

Sex gaps are small (≤ ≈0.5 points) at every tier. Both groups are under-predicted on average at demos (Female −1.47; Male −0.90), converging toward zero by transit (−0.97 / −0.77).

MAE gaps are small (≤ ≈0.5 points); signed error is negative for both groups at every tier (Students −1.59 → −2.47; non-students −1.11 → −0.50), indicating mild under-prediction that does not track tier widening.
5 Interpretation
- Employment is a calibration split, not an error shrinker. This is the same RQ1 pattern in live data that the tier-level MAE tables flatten: employment information did not lower pooled MAE, but the error is not exchangeable across employment groups. Full-Time respondents are predicted almost exactly (mean error ≈ 0), while Part-Time and Other respondents are systematically under-predicted by 2.0–3.6 points.
- The split is present from the base tier. It does not require mobility context to appear and does not worsen monotonically with tiers — it is a demographic stereotype surface, not a context-sensitive widening.
- Sex and student status are comparatively fair slices. Small absolute gaps and no monotone widening support a nuanced reading: the bias is not blanket; it is concentrated where employment categories carry inferential stereotypes (non-standard work arrangements → lower predicted CA).
- Mobility-exposure slices remain an open audit. The stereotyping battery defines
regular_transitandQ28slices (docs/stereotyping_evaluation.md); the manuscript reports these for the DeepSeek v2 export when available.
6 What questions or uncertainties remain?
Would the same employment calibration split appear in Llama-3.1 (whose transit collapse over-predicts interpersonal CA) or in the collapsed 70B? Do the Part-Time/Other under-predictions track true employment-rate differences in CA ground truth, or an agent prior? The stereo-type association tests (Kruskal–Wallis, ε²) in ca-personas stereotype-eval are the formal inference step for these gaps.
