Research question: Does meta-llama/Llama-3.3–70B-Instruct, when personified via prompt-v1 cumulative Terrarium narratives ((Grossmann et al., 2023)), recover participants’ group and interpersonal PRCA scores — and do employment (RQ1), transit (RQ2), or full cumulative context (RQ3) reduce absolute error?

1 Answer, Response, + Summary of Results

Full-cohort vLLM export on the matched Prolific↔︎Qualtrics sample (n = 241; 1,205 prompts; parse 100%). Result file: data/vllm/llama-3–70b/llama_70b.csv.

Short answer: Engineering success (valid CA JSON) but a failed digital twin via mode collapse. Across 1,205 prompts there are only 8 unique generated_text strings; ≈93% of rows emit the constant prior group = 18** / interpersonal = 12** (moderate / low bands). Pooled MAE is 6.02 (group) / 4.65 (IP). Group bands (26.3%) are below chance; IP bands (52.0%) look strong only because the constant low-IP prior matches cohort base rates — not because the model tracks individuals. Tier ladders are flat: RQ1–RQ3 are null.

1.3 RQ verdicts

  • RQ1 (employment): No — Δ MAE ≈ 0.
  • RQ2 (transit): No — flat (unlike Llama-3.1’s IP collapse; here nothing changes).
  • RQ3 (full): Negligible MAE dips still inside collapse.

Conclusion. Scaling to Llama-3.3–70B on prompt v1 does not improve digital-twin recovery on this cohort. The model behaves as a near-constant stereotype prior, not a person-conditioned estimator. Prefer smaller models that still vary predictions (DeepSeek group MAE 5.22; Llama-3.2 group bands 52.7%) for v1 comparisons, and treat 70B as a cautionary case for decoding / prompting / constrained-output follow-ups before claiming scale helps.

Was temperature / sampling configured too greedily (or with too-strong JSON schema forcing)? Does constrained decoding or higher temperature restore score variance without tanking parse rate? Does the same collapse appear under prompt packaging v2/v3?
